FDA RECALLS COFFEE PRODUCT WITH VIAGRA-LIKE SUBSTANCE

July 2017 saw the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in the US announce that Texas-based Bestherbs Coffee LLC was issuing a voluntary recall of a coffee product, because it contained desmethyl carbodenafil, a chemical similar to the active ingredient in Viagra.

The FDA noted in the recall notice that this “undeclared ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, such as nitroglycerin, and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.”

Bestherbs marketed the instant coffee ‘New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Herbs Coffee’ as a ‘male enhancement’ product. The FDA and the manufacturer said they were unaware of any health problems that may have occurred in people who ingested the product. Bestherbs said it would probably receive a few hundred to a thousand bags of the coffee product, which it would then hand over to the FDA for destruction.
