Kotkamills in Finland has unveiled an environmentally friendly disposable coffee cup that does not make use of a plastic liner.
‘ISLA Duo’ is Kotkamills’ solution to the growing problem of disposable cups which are sent to landfill in their billions.
“Coffee cups with PE plastic liners can be recycled,” said Kotkamills CEO Markku Hämäläinen, “but globally it has been difficult to do so due to the need to separate the plastic liner from the cup. Now, Kotkamills can be a game changer in the industry,” he claimed.
A traditional single-use coffee cup includes a barrier layer made from plastic, which prevents absorption. The barrier layer in ISLA Duo is a water-based dispersion coating rather than PE. Being plastic-free enables the product to be easily recycled as paper and board. The wood fibre can be reused fully.
