On 14 June 2018 the EU bought in new legislation which you should be aware of if you sell organic coffee.
The European Commission published new regulations on production and labelling of organic products – Regulation (EU) 20118/848 . The new legislation will apply from January 2021.
To accompany the regulation, there will be a number of implementing and delegated acts, which will include detailed rules for certification, including permitted farm inputs, additives and processing aids. These are being developed.
IFOAM EU has put together an overview on what the new organic regulation will change for organic farmers, processors and certifiers. It said the most important message to remember is that unless you are certified with an organic body, you cannot mark the coffee you sell as ‘organic’ on the packaging. It is illegal to label the coffee organic unless you are certified organic.
