COSTA RICA INVESTIGATES NEW BREED OF RUST

Reports from Costa Rica say the Coffee Institute of Costa Rica (Icafé) is investigating the possible presence on farms in the country of a new race of coffee leaf rust.

Icafé said it is possible that the new race of leaf rust, Hemileia vastatrix, could overcome the tolerance of the Costa Rica 95 (CR-95) variety grown in the country.

Experts from Icafé and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock have been examining the condition of coffee in plantations in the Nicoya Peninsula.

Icafé has sent samples of spores to Centro de Investigação das Ferrugens do Cafeeiro (Centre for Research into Coffee Rusts) in Portugal in order to verify whether it is a new race.
